Guiding Tractebel through SBTi target validation

Construction and engineering
In 2025, Slo supported Tractebel in defining its near-term decarbonisation targets and securing their validation by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Context and challenges - SBTi validation before commitment expiration

Tractebel, part of the group Engie, is a global engineering and consulting firm providing strategy, design and engineering services to help clients deliver sustainable and resilient solutions. Tractebel operates in key sectors such as nuclear, hydropower, power grids, water management, and transport infrastructure.
While Tractebel’s emissions may not be significant compared to Engie’s overall footprint, its activities differ significantly from Engie. As an engineering and consulting company, Tractebel aims to demonstrate its own climate leadership and committed to set Science Based Targets (SBTi) in October 2023.
With the target submission period expiring in October 2025, Tractebel was seeking support to facilitate the SBTi submission process and secure first-round validation by the SBTi.

Our approach - from emissions verification and target setting, to SBTi submission and defense

The project began with a detailed analysis of Tractebel’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 baseline emissions to ensure full alignment with the GHG Protocol and SBTi requirements. This analysis highlighted opportunities to reinforce methodological robustness and compliance with SBTi criteria.
Following the gap analysis, Slo supported Tractebel in updating its baseline to ensure full compliance.
With the baseline finalised, a workshop was organised with key stakeholders to review existing decarbonisation measures and align them with SBTi requirements. This exercise helped Tractebel recognise the need to strengthen some of its decarbonisation measures.
Once the targets and pathways were defined, Slo supported Tractebel in completing the SBTi validation portal and responding to SBTi queries during the assessment phase.

Lessons learned and key takeaways - expertise, clarity, and collaboration

Tractebel achieved SBTi validation on the first round, 3 weeks ahead of the schedule initially set by the SBTi. This success was made possible by:

-
Bringing the right experts, with experience in emissions verification and the SBTi process, enabling the early identification of gaps and securing validation on the first submission.
-
Providing clear and complete answers in the submission form and during interactions with the SBTi reviewer.
-
Finally, this achievement with such a short timeline wouldn’t have been possible without a close and agile collaboration between Slo and Tractebel’s teams throughout the entire project.
